Today‘s mobile technology has affected our way of life ranging from communications, internet usage, payment, and entertainments. To plan and develop these products and services, it is central to understand the nature of a system, which is a set of interrelated components to function together.

We are surrounded by systems: A banking system, computers, the Internet, a telephone system, airline and railroad systems, and so on. Even the earth is a global system. Organizational entities and families may be viewed as systems, too.

Now that we rely on so many systems, it is obvious that system failures can cause significant damage to our daily lives. In the recent news, banking and transportation system troubles have been repeatedly reported. Even with advanced technologies, it is not always possible to prevent system troubles. The reason for this is because it is human that operates a system. Human is part of a system. Therefore, it is essential to design a system with ergonomics in mind so that accidents caused by human factors will be reduced.

In addition to the functional side of a system, design is also our area of focus. It is often said that good design and good functionality go hand in hand. Our faculty is committed to promoting research and education in the field of design.

The strength of the faculty of system design can be largely attributed to its most comprehensive and cutting-edge courses on system design, synthesizing technology and aesthetics.

It covers the following areas: human mechatronics systems, information and communications systems, aerospace engineering, management systems engineering, and industrial art. The former four courses focus on functional aspect of a system, while the latter course focuses on aesthetical aspect of a system. Our faculty seeks to promote research and education in the field of system design and to prepare students to become professionals in using systems thinking.
